Spotlight on… Israel’s Automotive Technology Industry

Friday, March 25, 2011

With the world increasingly challenged by congested roads and polluted air, Israel’s ground-breaking automotive technologies are in the forefront of improving performance, efficiency, safety and air quality. While Israel does not engage in large scale vehicle manufacturing, about 150 Israeli manufacturers supply systems, parts, modules and tooling to original equipment manufacturers and the aftermarket. Israeli companies have successfully adapted military solutions for civilian use and made Israel a notable technology destination for the international automotive industry.

Israel exports about $800 million of automotive parts and systems annually, many of which are purchased by leading OEM manufacturers, including Daimler, BMW, VW, MAN, Renault-Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen, GM, Ford/Mazda, Navistar, Volvo Trucks and Jaguar. Such Tier 1 suppliers as Delphi, Bosch, Valeo, Autoliv, Faurecia, Johnson Controls, ZF, Getrag and Magna Steyr also source components from Israel. MAN, Ford/Mazda, Navistar and Hyundai maintain local purchasing offices, while Volvo Bus jointly owns bus manufacturer Merkavim Transportation Technologies with an Israeli company. Tomcar, a local company, manufactures rugged yet agile, military-proven off-road vehicles that have won wide acceptance.

Israel’s skilled workforce, strict compliance with international quality standards, computerized logistics and advanced R&D capabilities position the country as a prime destination for outsourcing and development of new products. In recent years Israel has developed a number of breakthrough technologies, including specialized materials, advanced electronics, communication systems, driver awareness systems, automotive IT and security. As electronics become an increasingly significant aspect of every vehicle, having recently risen from 15 percent to 35 percent of total car cost, Israel is well placed to become a leader in this market segment.

Toyota Recalling SUVs and Pickup Trucks Over Faulty Tire Pressure Monitors

Toyota Recalling SUVs and Pickup Trucks Over Faulty Tire Pressure Monitors

Approximately 22,000 Toyota trucks and SUVs are being recalled due to a faulty calibration of the tire pressure monitoring system that does not activate the low tire-pressure warning light at the required minimum activation pressure. The affected vehicles include the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Sequoia and Tundra from the 2008 through 2011 model year.
The Japanese automaker said dealers will re-initialize the tire pressure monitoring system on the affected models free of charge. Toyota has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for the recall.

Best car insurance company 2011

Best car insurance company 2011

Best car insurance company 2011 ; I just purchased a new car and my family and I have about 4 cars currently under farmers insurance and pays way over $200 on car insurance...the dealer at the agency mentioned that he bought the same car and has 4 other cars with Nationwide and pays under $200 full coverage. In your experience and in your opinion from what you know or have experienced which insurance companys over the best service for your buck or offer great options. I think we are paying a lot and the options aren't that great.

Well, it depends. Nationwide might be the best for him, but not for you. Depends on your credit score, your driving record, whether you own or rent, the coverages on your vehicles, your liability limits, deductables, the ages of the drivers, where you live, how much you drive etc etc etc. I would suggest calling an independent agent and asking for a quote. They represent more than one company so they can put you in the company that best suits your needs.

Toyota said to focus on emerging-markets growth in 10-year plan

Toyota said to focus on emerging-markets growth in 10-year plan

etter to the Editor

TOKYO (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., which traditionally gets a majority of its profit in the United States, will outline a strategy for growth in emerging markets in a 10-year plan the Japanese automaker is set to release this week, two people familiar with the plan said.
Toyota also plans to cut two vice-chairman positions and shrink its board to 17 or fewer members as part of the biggest management shakeup in eight years, according to two people who declined to be identified as the plan is private. Former President Katsuaki Watanabe will become an advisor without a board vote, and former head of research and development Kazuo Okamoto will move to an affiliate, the people said.
President Akio Toyoda will present a "Global Vision 2020" plan for the world's largest automaker on Wednesday, March 9, to help boost sales a year after the carmaker's biggest recall crisis. As part of its focus on emerging markets, the carmaker introduced the Etios compact in India in December, which will also be modified for sale in China, Thailand and Brazil.
Executive Vice President Yukitoshi Funo has dubbed the Etios as the "21st Century Corolla," a reference to its bestselling compact model. Investors and analysts have called on Toyota to reveal more about plans for next-generation models, shifting production away from Japan and boosting sales of luxury models. The automaker made about 60 percent of its operating profit from North America in the nine-months ended December 31, according to its financial statement.
"As the recall problem has settled down, there's hope that Toyota will turn around and get on the offensive, but I'm not optimistic," said Koji Endo, a Tokyo-based auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan. "Toyota has been trying to return to a less aggressive way of doing things after being so fixated on profit."
Slimmer board
Toyota's slimmer board may help it adapt to challenges and changes in the global industry quickly, the people said.
"Toyota has seemed cluttered with too many board members, and that has had consequences," said Tadashi Usui, an analyst at Moody's K.K. in Tokyo.
Toyota spokesman Koki Konishi said the automaker can't comment on the plan at this point.
After a global financial crisis and recalls of 20.4 million cars around the world since November 2009, Toyota has fallen behind rival Honda Motor Co. in terms of profit and operating margin. The company has said it plans to keep capital investments little changed for at least the next five years to cut costs.
Volkswagen, GM
With Volkswagen AG aiming to surpass Toyota as the world's largest carmaker by 2018, and competitors including General Motors Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. also gaining ground on the automaker, management has been divided over whether it should be more aggressive or remain cautious, said two Toyota group executives, who declined to be identified.
In Toyoda's testimony before Congress in February 2010, during the height of the recall crisis, he linked vehicle defects to the rapid expansion that pushed the company to the top of the industry.
"Quite frankly, I fear the pace at which we have grown may have been too quick," Toyoda said. The grandson of Toyota's founder has advocated a return to founding principles such as "putting the customer first" and "genchi genbutsu," or "going to see things first-hand."
Watanabe's plan
Toyota is continuing a cautious approach even as analysts say the company lags behind rivals in emerging markets such as China and India, said Karl Schlicht, head of the global product and marketing division at Lexus, the carmaker's luxury brand.
"We're not going all out to go as fast as we can in China," he said. "We've learned a big lesson. We want to be careful."
Toyoda's 2020 vision revises a plan outlined by Watanabe in November 2007, which included a goal of offering hybrid versions of all its models and commercializing next-generation battery technology and new modes of mobility.
Watanabe said in 2006 he expected the company's operating margin to grow to 10 percent from 8.5 percent at the time. That compares with 2.9 percent for the nine-month period through December.
The company expects to earn 490 billion yen ($5.95 billion) in net income in the year ending March 31, a figure that may almost double to 922 billion yen in the year ending March 2013, according to the average of 14 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That's still below the record 1.7 trillion yen it earned in fiscal year 2007.
Prius lineup
The company's focus on expanding its lineup of fuel-efficient models remains evident as it adds new versions of the Prius, the world's best-selling gasoline-electric model. Toyota displayed its Prius v wagon and a compact Prius c concept car at the Detroit auto show in January.
In the U.S., Toyota's biggest market, the company expects Prius models to make up its top-selling vehicle line by the end of the decade, overtaking the Camry sedan, according to Bob Carter, Toyota's group vice president for U.S. sales.
A plug-in hybrid and cars powered solely by batteries are also planned for next year. Toyota agreed last year to buy a $50 million stake in California-based Tesla Motors Inc. to collaborate on an electric version of Toyota's RAV4 sport- utility vehicle.
Toyota is also working on a new battery technology that improves upon lithium-ion cells. Vehicles with magnesium-sulfur batteries or alternative materials may be ready by about 2020, according to Jeffrey Makarewicz, an engineer at Toyota's technical center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Torture-tested Ford EcoBoost V6 engine torn down at Detroit Auto Show

by Jeremy Korzeniewski

Exactly as promised, Ford sent a couple of technicians to the show floor at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in front of a live audience to disassemble the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that was torture-tested for the equivalent of a few hundred thousand miles of rigorous duty on the dyno and in the engine bay of various F-Series trucks.

How'd it fair? Rather well, we'd say, and it managed to churn out 364 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque on the dyno after all the abuse it took. That matches up rather well with the factory ratings of 365 horses and 420 lb-ft.

As you might expect, there was a good amount of carbon build-up on the piston crowns and the valves – think of how much dust was surely ingested over the course of 1,062 miles of the Baja 1000 race, which this engine took part in, finishing first overall in its class – along with a 13-percent loss on one cylinder during the leak-down test. All other initial measurements were well within factory tolerances, and Ford will continue testing each individual piece from this engine to ensure its durability

Automotive High-strength stainless steel motorcycle frame developed

A pioneering stainless steel racing motorcycle has been developed by Highland Group and Outokumpu. The bike showcases the potential of high-strength stainless steel for the transportation industry.

This year at Scandinavia’s largest subcontractor trade show, Elmia, there was a real crowd catcher at the Outokumpu exhibition booth.

On display was a prototype racing steel motorcycle by Highland Group of Sweden, custom-designed and manufactured with the help of Outokumpu using high-strength grades of stainless steel.

The steel motorcycle, named Highland 450cc Supermoto, has drawn a lot of worldwide attention after Martin Lind of Sweden rode the bike to finish in second place at the Swedish Supermoto 2008 championship. With the help of the pioneering bike, he also clocked up a number of wins in the United States.

The problem

Supermoto is a combination of motocross and road racing, where the racing course alternates between a racing track and a dirt section in the infield. The motorcycles combine road-racing and off-road features. Compared to normal motorcycle racing, the tracks are short, twisty and incorporate high jumps. This means that manufacturers need to consider many other features aside from outright machine performance.

Highland Group is a spearheading motorcycle design house that develops complete motorcycles for established brand owners. In early 2006, Highland were looking for a new focus in their product development. For them, Supermoto presented the ultimate environment to test motorcycle performance against stress, shock and fatigue loads.

Their first idea was to develop a new motorcycle frame replacing carbon steel with aluminum. But when Outokumpu’s R&D unit for automotive applications, Prinox, caught wind of Highland’s ambitions, they jumped in, and suggested that Highland introduced high-strength stainless steels as optimal materials to create a frame with superior stiffness and strength. Highland was convinced by the pitch and saw the benefits of using Outokumpu’s high-strength stainless steels to create a superior steel motorcycle.

The solution

Highland engineers lacked experience with stainless steel, so they partnered with Prinox in product development. As a result of the partnership, a complete prototype steel motorcycle with a stainless steel chassis was presented at the Milan Motorcycle Fair in November 2006, nine months after the beginning of the product development process.

The main frame of steel motorcycle Highland 450cc Supermoto is in austenitic HyTens1200®, and the engine cradle and rear sub-frame are in duplex LDX 2101®. The chassis weight is 20 percent less than that of the best rivaling motorcycles. The precisely tuned chassis stiffness gives Highland 450cc Supermoto steel motorcycle additional competitive advantage over its competitors.

A number of factors put a stainless steel motorcycle frame at a distinct cost advantage over an aluminum frame. For example, austenitic high-strength stainless steel has excellent formability in the cold conditions. But aluminum requires lengthy procedures and elevated temperatures to transform it to a state where it can be used for applications such as this. Stainless steel also requires no surface treatment, whereas aluminum requires anodizing.

HyTens® stands for high-strength austenitic stainless steel grades specifically developed for the needs of automakers. Among their many benefits, HyTens® products can reach strengths many times higher than carbon steel in cold deformation, allowing considerable weight savings in structural components. HyTens® is highly formable, putting few limitations to component shapes.

The engine cradle and rear sub-frame of Highland 450cc Supermoto steel motorcycle are made from LDX 2101® square tubing. This is the first tubular application of this duplex grade. It features a combination of high strength and formability unmatched by competing tubular products. It is expected to find many uses in the automotive and other sectors, according to Stefan Ekblad of Prinox.

The result

The success of Highland 450cc Supermoto steel motorcycle, on and off the track, is a testament to Outokumpu’s strength as providers to the transportation industry.

Supermoto racer Martin Lind comments on his ride: “The Highland bike is very stable, yet nimble and easy to flick from side to side in turns. This is because we have achieved a favorable distribution of stress throughout the frame. Also, we have managed to reach a very low frame weight and, as a result, achieved a low center of gravity.”

He continues: “A major difference from my previous bikes is that this one is very predictable in its response when you’re over the limit. You don’t get into trouble as easily on this bike as you do on the competition.”

Road tankers Lean Duplex Makes a New Breakthrough in Road Tankers

OMSP Macola of Italy fabricates road tankers for transportation of carbon dioxide from Outokumpu’s proprietary duplex LDX 2101®.

Carbon dioxide is an important raw material for a wide range of industries, including food, oil and chemical. Transformed into liquid for convenient handling, it is classified as a hazardous material, and its storage and transportation are governed by codes for dangerous goods. Liquefied carbon dioxide is transported at a low temperature and an elevated pressure in road tankers specially designed for the application.

OMSP Macola is an Italian company specializing in industrial transportation vehicles including road tankers for cryogenic applications and hazardous materials. With a long-standing relationship with Outokumpu, the road-tank maker has used Outokumpu’s duplex 2205 plate for years with success to manufacture carbon-dioxide road tankers for one of the world-leading industrial gas suppliers. The company uses duplex 2205 to fabricate the inner, load-containing layer of road tankers’ double hull.

The concept

OMSP Macola recently secured a new customer for liquefied carbon-dioxide road tankers. This customer is open to innovation and keen to find new alternatives for the tankers to increase efficiency and competitiveness.

Based on their highly positive experiences with duplex 2205, OMSP Macola’s design engineers sat down with Outokumpu’s technical and sales team in Italy and IVENA S.r.l., a consulting company specializing in dangerous goods transportation, to find a new material with high performance and good economy. Together, the project partners decided to investigate if carbon dioxide road tankers could be manufactured from Outokumpu’s lean duplex LDX 2101®.

The solution

There is no norm for LDX 2101® in the application, which has necessitated a PMA (Particular Material Appraisal) procedure. The appraisal has involved extensive material testing in the customer’s laboratory. Bending tests have been conducted to determine ductility in the welded sections. The material’s tensile strength has been tested and its microscopic structure examined.

The tests have produced excellent results. Based on the results, the Italian Register of Shipping RINA has approved duplex LDX 2101® in accordance with code IMO 8, which governs shipping of dangerous goods.

The results

Owing to the high strength of duplex stainless steel, OMSP Macola reaps a 30-percent saving in the road-tanker container weight compared to containers fabricated from conventional steel. This is because the high pressure produced inside the tank to accommodate for the operating temperature range, which allows the high strength of LDX 2101® to be utilized.

In addition to the high mechanical strength of duplex that enables the remarkable weight reduction, OMSP Macola reports that they are pleased with the excellent ductility and weldability of LDX 2101®. According to company technical managers, the material is ideal for use in road equipment, meeting the high fatigue performance requirements set by the design codes of the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive. As such, LDX 2101® helps enhance safety on roads.

OMSP Macola expressed their gratitude to Outokumpu for such a succesful collaboration in technical and commercial matters and are keen to establish a standard production program for road tankers using duplex LDX 2101®.

limited-edition Reventón R/C car

Like the vast majority of humanity, we were never able to lay our hands on one of the 20 Lamborghini Reventón models the company built for the fabulously wealthy. We had neither the $1.27 million it took to call the car your very own nor the connections to be one of the few to even have the chance to purchase said Raging Bull. That’s just fine, though, because Lamborghini has partnered up with De Agostini to build a 1:10 scale R/C replica of the car for the masses. Well, maybe not the masses per-se – the company is only building 65 examples, so this ain’t your garden-variety Nikko or Tamiya.

Each one of the cars is crafted with impressive detail and features a 3cc gasoline engine mated to a two-speed transmission, a fully-independent suspension with hydraulic shocks and four-wheel disc brakes – all on an R/C car. Insane? Sure, but it’s our kind of crazy. Unfortunately, with so few of the cars being produced, we’re guessing they won’t be cheap enough for anyone we know to afford. History repeats itself. You can head over to the R/C car’s site for a closer look.
